Class 3H

Welcome back after the Christmas holidays! We hope that you have all had a lovely Christmas / New Year and are looking forward to the academic year ahead.

Year 3 Staff :

Class Teachers : Miss K. Naylor & Mr. N. Haigh

Support Assistants :   Mrs. K. Dudley, Mrs. C. McGee, Mr. R. Mallender & Mr. S. Jones

Our topic this term is ‘How to Train your Dragon’.

As part of this topic, we will be studying the Vikings as well as looking at the book

by Cressandra Cowell.  We will also be learning about Viking Gods, myths and

legends in order to enhance and improve our reading and writing skills.

The topic will be brought to life by visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre!

[see Topic Plan for full details]

In R.E. the topics are ‘Called to Change’ and the ‘Eucharist’.  Both are important topics for understanding the Christian faith.

In Mathematics we will be focusing on the basic skills of Mathematics still, as it is vital we know these and we practise applying these methods through problem solving and reasoning.  We will also be focusing on measurements, telling the time using both analogue and digital and focusing on 2D and 3D shapes.  It would be great if you could continue to practise times tables at home on a daily basis with your children.

In English - we will be carrying out lots of different writing techniques focusing on mythical creatures and stories containing mythical legends.  We will be writing stories, letters, instructions and character descriptions. We will engage in lots of discussions and learn a wide range of specific vocabulary.

In Science - we will be investigating and looking at light and dark. This will be linked to our topic as much as possible.

Physical Education (P.E.) - is on Monday afternoon and Friday morning (up until February half term), and then Monday and Wednesday afternoons.  Some children are consistently not bringing their P.E. kits to school.  Please ensure your child has a white t-shirt, blue (or black) shorts and a pair of trainers for outdoor use, which they should leave in school. All P.E. kit must be labelled clearly with your child’s name.   As an optional extra, a dark coloured pair of jogging trousers and a jumper can be used throughout the cold months, when we are outside.  As always, the only jewellery permitted in school is a pair of plain small studs and these must be removed for P.E. for safety.  Staff are not able to remove them or cover them, so this will result in your child not taking part in our P.E. lesson.

Please ensure your child has a P.E. kit in school at all times.

Homework -  this will be given out on a Friday and MUST be completed and returned to school by the following Thursday.  Please can we emphasis all homework must be attempted or brought to school to complete with an adult if your child is struggling.

Can we please remind parents that individual reading books MUST to be brought into school on a daily basis, so that your child can read every day in school.  Reading records will be given to the children for parents to fill out as and when their child reads during the week at home.  At home, they can read their library books or a book of their choice.

Thank you for your support with this.

School trip :  Jorvik Viking Centre, York (letter to follow).

Year 3 Assemblies : Our class assembly will take place on Friday, 11th May (Class 3H) and Friday, 18th May (3N) at 2:30 pm.

Holy Week Assembly :  Our Holy Week assembly will be Monday, 26th March at 2:30 pm.

Thank you

As part of our Advent preparation 3H made card advent wreaths along with a class advent wreath for use in our class worship leading up to advent.

Class members also decorated our pallet Christmas tree for display in Crows Nest Park.

Science

During this half term we have continued our investigations into Rocks and soil. We carried out an investigation to find out what soil was made up of and what else might be found in it.

We started our new topic on plants and split a flower into all its parts to identify what each part does.
