Year 4 - Autumn Term Curriculum
Welcome back after the summer holidays! We hope that you have all enjoyed your summer break and are looking forward to the academic year ahead.

Our topic this term is ‘The Amazing Amazon’.
In this topic we will explore the Ancient Mayan community and the Tropical Rainforests of the world.
The topic will be brought to life with a trip to Flamingo Land Zoo during the term. We will use artefacts and historical information to enhance and improve our reading, writing and history skills.
You can support your child’s learning by helping them research Rainforests and read up about them. If you do not have internet access at home, you can always use the library which will have plenty of books on the subject.
We will be learning about a wide spectrum of facts from the location of rainforests to the plants, animals and people that live in them. We will also learn about how rainforests are to survive in our modern age.

In R.E. the topics are ‘The Bible’ and ‘Trust in God’. Parents are encouraged to start discussions with children relating to these topics focusing on key terminology and its meaning.
In Maths we will be putting more emphasis on reasoning and investigation as well as the children being fluent in addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. You can support your child at home by practising times tables and ensuring that their homework is completed.
In English will be taught through our topic as well as poetry and non-fiction writing. We will be putting an emphasis on spellings and grammar. Once again we will continue to do a lot of work on reading and reading comprehension. Your child will need to return their reading books on a daily basis. Please support your child’s learning by listening to them read and filling out the record, as well as helping them with their spellings.
Our Science links with our topic as we will be investigating living things. We will incorporate plants and animals from the Rainforest into our learning. Once again to support your child’s learning, please ensure they complete any homework given that links to their Science work. Perhaps you could use the internet or library to help the children find out more about Rainforest plants and animals.
Physical Education (P.E.) - will take place in both classes on Wednesday afternoons, so children must ensure their P.E. kits are in school ready to be worn on those days. A P.E. kit consists of: a white t-shirt, blue (or black) shorts, and a pair of sports trainers for outdoor use, which they should leave in school. All P.E. kit must be clearly labelled with your child’s name. As an optional extra, a dark coloured pair of jogging trousers and a jumper can also be worn when we are outside / during the winter months.
In addition, the only jewellery permitted in school is a pair of plain small stud earrings. If your child has pierced ears, it would be appreciated, if you could kindly remove them on each morning of P.E. We are not able to remove them or cover them, so this will result in your child not taking part in our P.E. lesson / swimming lesson due to health and safety reasons. Long hair must be tied back.
Swimming - your child will be swimming on Fridays. Please refer to the letter you received with your child’s report in July, for further information on what your child requires.
Homework - as before, homework will be given out on a Thursday and MUST be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday.
School trip – this term we will be going to Flamingo Land Zoo. Details of this trip will follow.
Assembly - We will be having a joint Year 4 assembly on Friday, 10th November, 2:30 pm.

Year 4 Teachers
RE - Moses and the Exodus
We re-told the story of Moses and the Exodus using Freeze Frames, We had to think hard about how to represent character's emotions and the main parts of the story.
RE - Abraham
We used 'Conscience Alley' to try and think of Abraham's emotions when he was asked to leave his home. We thought of reasons for and against.
Topic - Weather Report
In Year 4 we are learning all about the Amazon Rainforest. In one of our topic lessons, we researched the weather and climate and produced our very own weather report!
